Lab created diamond engagement rings, explained honestly.

A lab created diamond is a real diamond: the same carbon, the same crystal structure, the same hardness, graded by the same laboratories. The differences that actually matter are price and resale, and both deserve a straight answer.

In short

Lab created diamonds are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds and cannot be told apart without laboratory equipment. They cost a fraction of the price, which usually buys a noticeably larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget. Their resale value is poor, but so is the resale value of natural diamonds. What a lab created diamond actually is

A lab created diamond is crystallized carbon grown under controlled conditions instead of forming underground. It is not a diamond substitute. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that look diamond-like; a lab grown diamond is a diamond, with the same cubic crystal lattice, the same 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and the same refractive index and dispersion that produce the brilliance and fire people are actually buying.

The US Federal Trade Commission removed the word “natural” from its definition of a diamond in 2018, precisely because origin is not what makes a diamond a diamond. The correct terms are “laboratory-grown” or “lab created”; “synthetic” is technically accurate but misleading in ordinary speech, and “fake” is simply wrong.

How they are grown

Two methods dominate, and both start from a thin slice of diamond seed crystal.

HPHT: high pressure, high temperature

The older method, and the one that most closely mimics geology. A carbon source is subjected to roughly 1,400–1,600°C and pressures around 5 to 6 gigapascals, on the order of 800,000 pounds per square inch, dissolving carbon into a molten metal flux from which it crystallizes onto the seed.

CVD: chemical vapor deposition

The method behind most gem-quality stones sold today. A seed sits in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, usually methane. Energy breaks the gas apart and carbon atoms settle onto the seed layer by layer. CVD runs at lower pressure, scales more easily, and gives finer control over the result, which is why capacity, and therefore price, has moved so quickly.

Either way the growth takes weeks, not the billions of years the marketing of mined stones tends to emphasize. The finished crystal is then cut and polished by the same cutters, on the same equipment, to the same standards.

The resale question, answered straight

Lab created diamonds do not hold their value. Production capacity has grown quickly, prices have fallen year over year, and a stone bought today will very likely be worth less in a decade. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

The context that usually gets left out: natural diamonds also resell far below what was paid at retail. The retail price of any diamond includes margin that does not come back on resale, and the second-hand market is thin for both. Neither is a financial instrument.

Which points at the only sensible framing. If you are choosing between them as investments, neither wins. If you are choosing which stone to wear every day for the next fifty years, the question becomes much simpler: which one do you actually want, and what does the budget buy in each?

What the price difference buys

The practical consequence of the price gap is that a fixed budget goes considerably further. In practice clients spend the difference in one of three ways:

  • A larger centre stone: the most common choice, and the most visible.
  • Better color and clarity at the same size, which matters more in step-cut shapes like emerald and asscher where inclusions have nowhere to hide.
  • A more ambitious setting: hidden halos, detailed galleries, pavé along the shank, or simply keeping the difference.

Because prices move quickly, a percentage figure quoted on a web page ages badly. The useful thing is a live comparison: tell us the budget and we will price the same design in both, with the actual stones available that week.

Certification

Buy a graded stone. For lab created diamonds that generally means a report from IGI, which grades the majority of them, or GIA, which grades both origins. The report will state explicitly that the stone is laboratory-grown and give the standard color, clarity, cut and carat grades on the same scale used for mined stones.

Graded lab stones are also laser-inscribed on the girdle with the report number and origin: invisible without magnification, permanent, and the simplest way to confirm that the stone in the ring is the stone on the certificate.

Setting a lab diamond in a custom ring

Nothing about the process changes. A lab created stone is set exactly as a mined one is, in the same metals, with the same techniques and the same durability. The custom design process runs identically: CAD first, wax try-on if you want one, then manufacture in about two weeks.

Common questions

Are lab created diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab created diamond is pure crystallized carbon with the same cubic crystal structure as a mined diamond: the same hardness, the same refractive index, the same optical behavior.

It is not a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials entirely; a lab grown diamond is chemically and physically a diamond.

How can you tell a lab diamond from a natural diamond?

Not by eye, and not with a loupe. Even experienced jewelers cannot distinguish them visually. Identification requires specialized laboratory equipment that detects growth patterns and trace elements left behind by the growth process.

Graded stones are also laser-inscribed on the girdle with their origin and certificate number.

How much cheaper are lab created diamonds?

Substantially. For a comparable size and quality a lab created diamond typically costs a fraction of a natural one, and the gap has widened considerably as growing capacity has increased.

Because prices move quickly, the genuinely useful comparison is a live quote on both options at your budget, not a fixed percentage on a web page.

Do lab created diamonds hold their value?

Generally no, and it is the most important caveat on this page. Lab created diamond prices have fallen steadily as production has scaled, so resale value is poor.

Worth saying in the same breath: natural diamonds also resell for far less than their retail purchase price. Neither stone should be bought as an investment.

Do lab diamonds get cloudy or fade over time?

No. This is a persistent myth. A lab created diamond is the same material as a mined diamond and is equally stable. It does not cloud, fade, discolor, or degrade.

Like any diamond it collects skin oils and needs occasional cleaning, which is usually what people are describing when they say a stone has gone dull.

Which certification should a lab created diamond have?

Look for a report from IGI or GIA, the two laboratories that grade the large majority of lab created diamonds. It should state that the stone is laboratory-grown and give the standard color, clarity, cut and carat grades.

Any stone worth buying comes with one. Treat its absence as a reason to walk away.
