Lab diamond vs. moissanite: the honest comparison.

The short answer

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. Moissanite is not. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a different mineral with different optics, and it throws noticeably more rainbow fire as a result. Both are legitimate choices when honestly described. What has changed is the money: lab diamond prices have fallen so far that moissanite's main argument has largely evaporated.

This comparison usually gets written by someone selling one of the two, which is why it usually reaches a confident conclusion. I sell both, and I think the honest answer depends almost entirely on your budget and on how you feel about rainbows.

What is the actual difference?

They are different minerals. That is not a technicality, it is the whole thing.

A lab grown diamond is carbon arranged in a cubic crystal lattice. So is a mined diamond. They are the same material with the same hardness, the same optical properties, and the same behaviour, distinguishable only by trace growth features that a laboratory can see and you cannot. Moissanite is silicon carbide: silicon and carbon in a hexagonal structure. GIA classes it among diamond simulants, materials that "are completely unrelated to diamonds at the atomic level."

Two rows there do the real work. Dispersion of 0.104 against 0.044 means moissanite splits light into spectral colours more than twice as strongly as diamond, which is the source of its distinctive rainbow flash. And double refraction means light entering the stone splits into two rays, so facet edges appear doubled when you look through it at an angle. In a small stone this is invisible. Past about a carat and a half it becomes something you can see.

How do you tell them apart?

Not by eye, reliably, and not with a cheap thermal tester either. This trips up more people than anything else in the category.

Old diamond testers measure thermal conductivity, and moissanite conducts heat similarly enough to diamond that it passes. Testers sold as combination diamond and moissanite testers add an electrical conductivity check, which does separate them, but only if the seller owns one and uses it.

The reliable tells are optical: look through the table at a shallow angle under magnification and moissanite shows doubled facet junctions, and under most lighting it throws more coloured fire than a diamond of the same size. In practice, though, the answer for a buyer is paperwork. A lab grown diamond comes with an IGI report tied to a laser inscription on the girdle. Moissanite does not. If a stone is being sold as a lab diamond and there is no report, treat the claim as unsupported.

That is not a hypothetical. We bought more than fifty stones advertised as lab grown diamonds from over twenty eBay sellers, and every single one was moissanite, most with a coating on the pavilion that polished off. Moissanite is a perfectly good product. Moissanite sold as a diamond is fraud.

Does moissanite still make financial sense?

Less than it used to, and this is the part most comparisons have not caught up with.

The case for moissanite was never optical. It was that you could have a large, bright, durable stone for a small fraction of a diamond's price. That argument was overwhelming in 2018, when a two carat lab grown diamond was still expensive.

Lab grown diamond prices have since fallen by something like 80 to 90 percent from their 2020 levels, and they now sit close to a production-cost floor. A one carat lab grown round in a decent quality is a few hundred dollars at wholesale. Moissanite has not fallen nearly as far, because it was already cheap and its price was never being propped up by the same dynamics. The gap between the two has narrowed from a chasm to a step.

Which means the question has changed. It used to be "can you afford a diamond?" It is now closer to "do you prefer more fire, or do you prefer the word diamond and a grading report?" Both are legitimate answers, but the second one now costs much less than people assume.

Which one actually looks better?

Genuinely a matter of taste, and people are unusually consistent once they see them side by side. Moissanite is showier. It throws more coloured light, and in bright sun or under restaurant spotlights it does something diamond does not: a visible spray of rainbow. Some people find that spectacular and some find it reads as costume.

Diamond returns more of its light as white brilliance with flashes of colour rather than sheets of it. It is the more restrained of the two.

My advice is to look at both in daylight rather than in a jewelry store, because retail lighting is engineered to make everything look like moissanite. And note that the difference scales with size. At half a carat almost nobody can tell. At three carats almost anybody can.

What about durability?

Both are fine for daily wear, and the gap is smaller than the numbers suggest. Diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale and moissanite about 9.25, but the scale is not linear and both sit far above anything they will meet in ordinary life. Neither will scratch from normal wear.

The more relevant property is toughness, meaning resistance to chipping, and here both have the same real vulnerability: an exposed girdle or a sharp corner struck at the wrong angle. A pear or marquise tip is the usual casualty. That is a setting problem, not a material problem, which is why a protective bezel or a well-designed prong matters more than which stone you chose.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose a lab grown diamond if you want a graded, inscribed stone, if the word diamond matters to you or to the person wearing it, or if you want the more restrained look. At current prices this is affordable for most budgets that would previously have ruled it out.
  • Choose moissanite if you love the extra fire, if you want the largest possible stone for a very tight budget, or if you want something for travel or for a piece that will take hard wear.
  • Do not choose an unlabelled stone from a marketplace listing on the promise that it is a lab diamond.

One thing from the bench: the clients who end up happiest with moissanite are the ones who chose it deliberately, usually because they liked the fire. The ones who end up disappointed almost always chose it as a compromise. At today's lab diamond prices, that compromise is rarely necessary any more, and it is worth pricing the diamond version before assuming it is out of reach.
