Designing a marquise engagement ring that feels like yours

The short answer

A marquise engagement ring needs a setting designed around its elongated shape, pointed ends and the way you want to wear it. Orientation, tip protection, height and wedding-band fit should be considered together, before the design is finalized.

A marquise has a lot of personality before we add anything to it. Which I love, because we already have something to respond to.

But a picture from directly above is only part of the ring. You are going to turn your hand, put on a sweater, wear it beside another band, live your actual life in it, and I want the design to make sense through all of that too.

This is where custom gets interesting. We can take the shape you love and work out how it belongs on your hand.

Should a marquise sit north-south or east-west?

Either orientation can work; the choice changes the shape of the ring on your finger.

North-south runs along the finger. East-west turns the stone across it. I would start by showing you the difference in proportion, because sometimes a person loves the idea of one orientation and then sees the other on their hand and everything clicks.

There is no rule that an unusual orientation automatically makes a ring more personal. If the traditional direction is the one you love, good. We can make that yours too.

Think about the outline of the whole ring, including how much band you want to see on either side. A long stone and a wide band are a different conversation from a long stone and a very delicate band, even when the center is identical.

How should the pointed ends be protected?

The setting should account for the marquise's tips, with protection suited to the individual stone and design.

GIA's diamond care guidance makes a useful distinction: scratch resistance is not the same as resistance to chipping. Diamonds are hard, but they can still break. Pointed ends deserve particular attention.

We can discuss tip-covering prongs, including V-shaped prongs, or a bezel approach where it suits the design. I wouldn't promise that any setting makes a ring damage-proof, and I wouldn't choose a setting from a front-view photograph without considering how it is built.

You can love a delicate-looking ring. I just want the structure supporting that look to be part of the conversation.

How low can a marquise engagement ring sit?

The lowest practical setting depends on the stone's depth, the ring structure and what needs to fit beside it.

“Low” is a good starting preference. It is not a complete specification. I want to know whether you are concerned about catching the ring on things, whether you work with your hands, whether you dislike feeling a tall setting, and whether a straight wedding band sitting flush is important to you.

Those priorities can pull in different directions, which is why I would rather explain the tradeoff while we can still change the design.

When we design a custom engagement ring, the side view deserves real attention. It is easy to get distracted by the top view because that is the exciting bit, I know, but the side view tells us things the glamour shot doesn't.

Will a wedding band fit beside it?

That depends on both rings, so we should consider the intended wedding band early.

If you already own one, bring it into the discussion. If you haven't chosen one, tell me whether you picture a straight band, a curved band, something substantial or something barely there.

A gap can be intentional. A shaped band can be beautiful. Neither needs to be treated as a mistake, but you should know which result you are designing toward.

I would much rather have that conversation now than have you discover later that the two rings you love separately do not sit together the way you imagined.

Can a marquise ring include something personal without looking busy?

Yes. A meaningful detail can be tucked into the design rather than added to the top.

One of our marquise engagement ring upgrades had a 3ct center in 18k yellow gold, with four hidden stones inside the band representing the husband, wife and their two children.

From the outside, you see the ring. Inside, there is this little piece of their family. I love that the wearer knows it is there, it doesn't need to announce itself to everyone else to matter.

The customer's response was: “That is absolutely insane. Its beautiful. Exactly what I was picturing”.

That is the part I want to get right. A ring can be technically well made and still miss what somebody meant. The conversation matters because the goal is to make the thing you were trying to describe, including the part that isn't easily described.

Does the center have to be colorless?

No. Color is part of the design brief, alongside shape and origin.

I work with colored and colorless diamonds, both natural and lab-grown, and unusual colored gemstones. If what you love is the marquise outline and a particular color, tell me both. We can discuss suitable possibilities and the practicalities of wearing them.

A sometimes ring and an everyday engagement ring ask different things of a stone. I want you to have that information before choosing, without losing the thing that made you fall in love with the idea.

Still choosing the center? My marquise diamond selection guide focuses on the stone itself.

What should I send you to start?

Send the marquise rings you keep saving, then tell me which parts you want to keep and which parts you would change.

Add your budget, timing, ring size if known, and anything about daily wear that feels relevant. You do not need a fully resolved design. Working that out together is the point.
