How long does a custom engagement ring take?
About two weeks to manufacture once a design is approved, and three to six weeks from the first conversation to a ring in your hand. Manufacturing is the predictable part. The variable is the design phase, which depends almost entirely on how quickly you make decisions, not on how fast a workshop can work.
The honest answer is that a custom engagement ring takes about three to six weeks, and that almost nobody's ring takes exactly that, because the number is dominated by a stage most people do not think of as part of the schedule.
Making the ring is the reliable part. Two weeks, give or take, and a workshop can plan around it. Deciding what the ring is can take an afternoon or it can take a month, and that is the number that actually moves.

Why does manufacturing take two weeks?
Because a cast ring is made in stages, and several of them cannot be hurried without showing. The printed pattern is invested in plaster, the plaster is fired so the pattern burns out, and molten metal fills the resulting cavity. That is lost-wax casting, and the burnout stage alone runs for hours in a kiln on a fixed schedule.
Then the real time begins. The casting is cut from its sprue, filed, pre-polished, and the stone seats are cut by hand. Setting a center stone and a row of pavé is slow, delicate work done under a microscope by someone who does only that. Final polishing and rhodium plating, if the piece is white gold, follow after.
Two weeks is not a queue. It is the work.
Why is the design phase the unpredictable part?
Because it moves at the speed of your decisions. The CAD work itself is fast. A first design usually comes back within a couple of days of a brief, and a revision turns around in a day. What stretches the phase is the gap between a design landing in your inbox and you deciding what you think about it.
That is not a criticism. It is a large purchase and thinking about it is reasonable. But it is worth knowing that a client who replies to each round within a day will have a finished ring roughly two weeks sooner than a client who takes a week to sit with each one, with identical work happening at the jeweler's end.
The other design-phase variable is how many rounds there are. Two or three is typical. If you are working from a clear reference image, one round sometimes does it. What makes a custom ring take longer?
- A specific or rare stone. A one carat round lab diamond in a common quality can be found the same day. A 3 carat unheated Ceylon sapphire in a particular blue, or a well-cut old mine cushion, can take weeks of looking. Sourcing is the stage most likely to blow a schedule.
- Hand engraving or milgrain. Hand work is done by a specialist, and specialists have queues. Add one to two weeks.
- Fitting to an existing ring. If a band has to sit flush against a ring you already own, that ring usually has to be physically in the workshop or precisely scanned, which adds a shipping leg at the front.
- A wax model try-on. About a week, almost all of it mail. Worth it in most cases.
- December. The whole trade is busy from mid-November, so casting houses and setters run longer queues exactly when the most people want rings.
Can you hit a specific proposal date?
Yes, and that is the normal way to run the project. The schedule gets built backwards from the date rather than forwards from today, which changes what gets recommended.
With eight weeks, everything is comfortable: sourcing options, several design rounds, a wax model, and a buffer. With five weeks it still works well, usually by skipping the wax model or by being decisive about the stone early. With three weeks it is achievable but the decisions have to be quick and the stone has to be something available now rather than something being hunted.
Under three weeks the honest answer is often that a fully custom ring is the wrong tool, and that a well-chosen ready-made piece now, with a custom ring made later at a calmer pace, produces a better outcome than a rushed build. How far ahead should you start?
Two months before the date you have in mind. Not because it takes two months, but because it gives you a real design phase instead of a compressed one, and because the difference between a good ring and the right ring is usually made in the rounds you would otherwise have skipped.
